Winston Churchill Statue
1973
Ivor Roberts-Jones's bronze of Sir Winston Churchill has stood in Parliament Square since 1973, when it was unveiled by his widow Clementine before the Queen, the serving prime minister and four former prime ministers. The statue shows Churchill in a naval greatcoat, leaning on a stick and looking across to the Houses of Parliament. The plinth beneath it is De Lank granite. For a monument always meant to be permanent, in the most symbolic square in the country, the stone was chosen for the reasons it has always been valued: it does not weather, it does not stain, and its silver-grey colour sets off the dark bronze above. The single word CHURCHILL is cut into the granite along the front edge.
