London Bridge
Various
The London Bridge that crosses the Thames today was completed in 1973, replacing John Rennie's bridge of 1831. De Lank granite was chosen to face the new crossing, and the lettering that names the bridge was prepared at the quarry before the stone was shipped to London. It is the latest in a long line of crossings to carry the name, each with deep roots in the history of the city. The De Lank archive holds material from the contract, from the lettered fascia panels laid out in the works shed to the finished piers standing in the river. The granite has carried the full weight of London's traffic for over fifty years.
