# De Lank Quarry

> Britain's oldest active granite quarry, established 1759 on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. Producers of silver-grey Cornish granite for architectural, civil engineering and landscaping projects. De Lank is now the only Cornish granite quarry still working at scale.

## About

De Lank Quarry is located at St. Breward, Bodmin, Cornwall, PL30 4NQ. Granite has been worked here on the western edge of Bodmin Moor since 1759, making it one of the longest-running granite quarries in Britain and, today, the last Cornish granite quarry still producing in the quantities needed for construction and masonry. The stone is a distinctive silver-grey Cornish granite drawn from a single geological body, the Bodmin Moor granite.

The quarry has a long association with the Duchy of Cornwall, including a reported 40-year supply agreement for the Nansledan new town development in Newquay, and has received a royal visit from the then Prince of Wales, now King Charles III.

- Eddystone Lighthouse, off Plymouth (completed 1882) — the present (fourth) tower, built from De Lank granite dressed and dovetailed at Wadebridge. De Lank's defining historic commission.
- Tower Bridge, London (1886–1894) — De Lank was one of the Cornish quarries that supplied granite for the towers, piers and river facing.
- Victoria (Thames) Embankment, London (1860s–1870s) — De Lank granite among the Cornish granite supplied for the river walls.
- London Bridge (completed 1973) — De Lank granite facing; the lettering was prepared at the quarry.
- Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London (redevelopment completed 1999) — De Lank granite used.
- Portcullis House, Westminster, London (2001) — De Lank granite used.
- Winston Churchill statue plinth, Parliament Square, London (1973).
- Trafalgar Square, London (2003) — paving, steps and seat benches; Foster + Partners scheme.
- Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain, Hyde Park, London (2004) — around 600 tonnes of De Lank granite in 545 pieces, designed by Kathryn Gustafson.
- Eden Project 'Seed', Cornwall (2007) — a monumental sculpture by Peter Randall-Page, quarried and carved at De Lank from a single block of granite weighing around 167 tonnes.
- US Embassy, Nine Elms, London (2016–2018) — over 1,000 linear metres of large-format flamed cladding (2.2m x 1m panels).
- Chelsea Barracks, London (2017 onwards) — phases 1–4.
- Buckingham Palace, London (2019) — works using De Lank granite.
- Thames Tideway Tunnel (the "Super Sewer"), London — De Lank granite for the new riverside public realm, including the Bazalgette Embankment at Blackfriars.
- Nansledan, Duchy of Cornwall, Newquay (2017–present) — long-term granite supply agreement.
- Heartlands, Pool, Cornwall — De Lank granite boulders in the Diaspora Gardens, commemorating the Cornish mining diaspora.
